LinkedIn is one of the highly professional social media platforms, where you can discuss, network, and share your industry knowledge, search for new career opportunities, and many more. It is the place where you have to be professional and formal all the time. It is important to start using LinkedIn at a graduation level as it helps to become more comfortable and familiar with the platform to find career opportunities as well as analysis which career path to choose.
I am mentioning the four most important things which you need to do on LinkedIn as a graduate:
- Keep an eye on career progression at an organization
When an organization is listed on LinkedIn, you need to find out the employees who are working in that organization there. It is important to check their LinkedIn profile and find out how long they have been working in the organization and at what position they are now and from where they started.
This observation will help you to find out whether there is enough scope for growth in the organization or not. There can be a situation where you see a lot of people working in the same organization, so in this situation use the ‘All filters’ tool to track specific job positions, or see which university/school employees are from working there now.
- Search for Graduate Jobs
In 2021, LinkedIn will be one of the greatest platforms to find relevant jobs. You can easily turn on your alerts notification for new job postings and can analyze your profile & skillset.
LinkedIn provides an easy apply feature which helps job seekers as well as the employees who are already working in some organization and have no time to fill lengthy job applications present on the organization website.
If you are applying for a job at a graduate level through LinkedIn, then there are great chances that the organization will have their official page on LinkedIn linked with their website and employees working in that organization will automatically show up. This is one of the most effective ways to know more about the organization.
- Find employees and start to network with them
I find LinkedIn a great platform for graduate students as they can connect/network with industry professionals in their stream or area. It is advisable not to spam them with requests, doubts, and questions in the message area.
If you can find out that one organization where you want to work in, then you can filter the employees’ results seen by you and if someone known comes up, do contact them and ask for their feedback on the same. Always remember to look at their LinkedIn profile completely because sometimes people state that they don’t want to get any messages from their LinkedIn connections on LinkedIn.
- Analyze what experience and skills are needed
When you are analyzing employees’ LinkedIn profiles, you need to look at what accreditation do they have or are pursuing. For examples – there is a graphic designer who is working in the same organization where you are thinking to apply then it becomes very important to see that from where they have studied, what all graphic designing courses they have done in the past, how their portfolio looks, their past employers and many more.
This step will help you to make a further decision whether it is important for you to do a Master’s after graduation or not.
